  • Breaking down walls, Detroit Baptists honor MLK

    DETROIT (BP) -- Not far from Eight Mile Road, a historic racial dividing line in Detroit, more than 100 diverse Southern Baptist pastors, state leaders and laypersons worshipped together on Martin Luther King Jr. day.

    The 7 p.m. service marked a milestone for 78-year-old African American pastor Robert Coverson, the event's preacher, who marched in Detroit with King during the civil rights movement. Many suburban residents are afraid to cross Eight Mile Road and venture into the deep inner city during the day, Coverson said, let alone after dark.

    "I saw last night God touching the hearts of people and I saw walls falling," Coverson told Baptist Press the next morning. "I saw hearts being tenderized for the idea of we are our brother's keeper. I saw a new love relationship starting. It was awesome." Read More

    NASHVILLE (BP) -- When a white supremacist gunned down nine black worshipers at Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston, S.C., mission catalyst Bob Lawler knew he had to say something to the Baptist association he led in northern California.

    So Lawler gathered the association's 48 ethnically diverse churches for a joint worship service. When he stood to preach, Lawler harkened to the words of Martin Luther King Jr.

    "In the 'I Have a Dream' speech," Lawler recalled telling the Redwood Empire Baptist Association, "not only did [King] say, 'I have a dream. I have a dream.' He also said, 'with this faith'" repeatedly, "reminding us that it's not just a humanitarian effort" to effect racial reconciliation. "It's an effort based on the Gospel." Read More

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- An evangelical Christian conference honoring Martin Luther King Jr. found an audience that far surpassed even the 4,000 people gathered April 3-4 at the Memphis Convention Center.

    The number of views of the conference's proceedings by live video streaming exceeded one million, The Gospel Coalition (TGC) announced April 9. By comparison, TGC's 2017 national conference recorded 57,000 livestream views, according to the organization. Read More

    MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Southern Baptists should build on and apply the historic 1995 resolution on racial reconciliation while always being ready to repudiate racism, panelists said April 4 at a conference commemorating civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. on the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

    The comments came during a breakout session of "MLK50: Gospel Reflections From the Mountaintop," a two-day event attended by about 3,900 people and co-hosted by the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and The Gospel Coalition.     MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- Evangelical Christians must be willing to pay the price to gain racial unity, speakers said Wednesday (April 4) at a conference on the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

    The final day of "MLK50: Gospel Reflections From the Mountaintop" occurred as Memphis and the country remembered King, who was shot down April 4, 1968, in this Mississippi River city. The two-day event -- co-hosted by the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and The Gospel Coalition (TGC) -- took place in conjunction with many remembrances of King, including a ceremony at the Lorraine Motel, where he was killed, that conference participants were able to attend. (BP) -- White evangelicals' failures regarding racial justice call for repentance, a crowd of nearly 4,000 people heard speakers say Tuesday (April 3) on the first day of a conference to commemorate Martin Luther King Jr. on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of his assassination.

    The first two speakers at "MLK50: Gospel Reflections From the Mountaintop" -- a white Southern Baptist leader and an African-American pastor -- both pointed to the church's widespread failure to turn away from its past and present to abide by the teachings of Jesus and His Gospel. The two-day event, co-hosted by the Southern Baptist Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC) and The Gospel Coalition (TGC), is taking place at the Memphis Convention Center half a century after King's slaying April 4, 1968, in the same city.     MEMPHIS, Tenn. (BP) -- MLK50 conference conveners lamented and asked God for brokenness in the evangelical church during a time of prayer at the close Tuesday (April 3) of the first day of a gathering to honor the life and legacy of the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

    The prayer session occurred at "MLK50: Gospel Reflections From the Mountaintop," a two-day conference on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the assassination of King.
